On Monday, 20 February 2012, CCFD received a call for services in station from an active firefighter. The caller reported that her father-in-law had fallen, was uninjured, but needed assistance up off of the floor. The firefighter normally would take care of this, but is currently on medical restrictions for an injury herself and requested assistance from the department. The four on-duty personnel at the station mounted Engine 807 and responded non-emergency to the 1100 block of Ridge Avenue.

Upon arrival, the Engine 807 crew entered the home to examine the elderly male, finding no obvious signs of any injury. He was asked several times if he wanted to be checked out by a medic, which he stated that he was not injured in any way, he simply needed help to stand up. Several firefighters helped the man up and to sit down in a chair. He was examined closely again to make sure that he was not injured and nothing was found. Since he was refusing any further medical assistance, Engine 807 cleared the scene and returned to quarters, ready for the next call for emergency services.

NOTE: Starting on 4 March 2012, all CCFD emergency responders and support staff will at a minimum maintain current certifications in First Aid, CPR/AED and Blood-borne Pathogens. The majority of CCFD personnel already meet this new minimum standard of service and several have additional emergency medical training, including one who is an EMT.

Each month, CCFD hosts the Susquehanna Wrestling Organization for an entertaining evening of chaos and mayhem. Typically, these events result in no injuries or only a minor cut, bump or bruise some times. However, there is the occasional serious injury from the testosterone-fueled acrobatic antics that requires medical attention. This past event was one such occasion…

Saturday, 18 February 2012 was the most recent event, billed as “Hostile Intent” featuring several grudge matches between long-time rivals. One match in particular featured a three-way battle that resulted in one broken table, one battered metal chair, a bloody nose and one possible broken arm. CCFD personnel were alerted to the injuries and immediately examined the wrestler who’s arm was already easily swelled up to twice it’s normal size. He had taken a serious blow to the (not-so) funny bone and was in a lot of pain. Unable to move his arm or wrist without wincing, Lancaster County-Wide Communications was notified, requesting a medic to respond to the firehouse.

Columbia’s QRS-8 and Susquehanna Valley EMS arrived at the station within minutes of the call and examined the winged wrestler. It was determined that he should have it X-rayed to rule out a broken bone. The wounded wrestler walked to the ambulance and was transported to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment. It was later reported back to the firehouse that the wrestler did not break anything, but would have a badly bruised arm that would be quite tender for several days.

In the early evening hours of Thursday, 16 February 2012, Truck & Engine 807 were dispatched along with Engine 804 for a reported chimney fire in the 600 block of South 14th Street. Chief 80 was first on location, reporting that there were flames coming out of the chimney. Engine 804 was first on location, throwing a ground ladder to gain access to the roof and chimney. Truck 807 arrived shortly afterwards, throwing additional ground ladders to support 804 personnel working on the roof.

Crews found a severely clogged chimney flu and proceeded to drop chimfex flares and “chimney bombs” made from dry chemical powder after the fire box was emptied. After several attempts, the fire was finally extinguished and the home owner was advised to have the chimney properly cleaned before lighting it again. Crews returned their tools and equipment to their rigs and the incident was placed under control; all units returned home, available for the next call for services.

Early this morning at 02:21, the 807 volunteers were roused by a dispatch for a vehicle accident standby in the 500 blk. of Old Chickies Hill Rd. Columbia Borough Police were on the scene with a single vehicle down an embankment into a creek bed with the occupant uninjured. Engine 807 quickly made the response and assessed the scene for any environmental hazards. Finding none the engine crew set up lighting and stood by while a flat bed quickly and smoothly removed the vehicle.

As members ventured home and in-house firefighters attempted to return to their slumber, station 807 was struck out again at 03:51 for an upgraded dwelling assignment in the 300 Blk. of Walnut St. Engine 801 was en-route for an investigation when Police reported a smoke condition in the building, upgrading the box. Truck 807 was on the street in seconds with four personnel. Arriving units made entry and found a small burnt cooking fire in the kitchen and a resident asleep upstairs. Truck crew quickly set up positive pressure ventilation and lighting in the front. After a short check for extension and vent operation, all units returned to quarters.

On Monday February 13th, at approximately 19:00 as members were assembled for training, Station 807 was dispatched as part of the reported structure fire assignment in the 700 Block of Chestnut St. The caller reported fumes in the home and alarms going off. Engine 807 made the response and was the first unit on the scene. CCFD personnel began investigating as another crew from Engine 804 entered the building to assist. Everything seemed normal until the cellar door was opened, at which time 807′s gas meter alerted that there was a high level of carbon monoxide. Within seconds, 804′s meter also detected a dangerously high level of carbon monoxide present.

All non-essential personnel were ordered out of the house and PPV was established to get rid of the carbon monoxide. A secondary, negative pressure fan was also placed in service in the cellar bilco door to facilitate the process. The haze and carbon monoxide was caused by the furnace malfunctioning, but no injuries were reported. When the ventilation process was complete, all units were placed available.
